Living Through a Renovation Without Losing Your Routine

A practical plan for families who stay in the house during a major remodel: dust control, temporary kitchens, and how to sequence the work so life keeps moving.

Most families cannot move out for four months, and most do not have to. Staying in the house during a renovation works when the work is sequenced around your routine instead of the other way around. This is the approach we use on whole-home projects in the Wexford area.

Decide which rooms are off limits first

Before a schedule is written, pick one bathroom and one sleeping area that stay untouched until the last week of the project. Everything else can move. Having one guaranteed working bathroom removes most of the daily friction that makes people regret renovating.

Build a temporary kitchen that is not a joke

The basement or laundry room becomes the real kitchen for a few months. What makes it work:

  • A dedicated counter surface, even if it is a folding table against a wall with a cutting board on top.
  • The refrigerator, moved down and plugged into a dedicated circuit.
  • A microwave, an electric kettle, a slow cooker, and a single induction burner.
  • A dish tub and a location near a utility sink so you are not carrying plates up a flight of stairs.

Plan two weeks of meals that do not require an oven. Then order takeout once a week without guilt.

Contain dust at the source, not the hallway

We install sealed plastic barriers with zipper doors at the work zone, tape off HVAC returns inside the zone, and run an air scrubber on larger jobs. That is the single biggest quality of life item on a remodel, and it costs far less than the cleaning it prevents.

Sequence the trades to protect your evenings

The loud, dusty work happens between 7:00a and 3:30p. Drywall sanding days get announced the night before so you can plan to be out. Inspections are scheduled in the morning so nobody is waiting on a call in the afternoon. If a trade needs the water off, we tell you the day before and we turn it back on the same day.

Expect one bad week

There is always a week where a wall is open, a temporary line is visible, and nothing looks finished. Ours is usually framing and rough-in week. It ends. On the other side of it, the house starts looking like the drawings.

A schedule you can actually read

Every Wexford Contractor whole-home project comes with a written schedule that names each phase, the trade in the house, and the week we expect an inspection. If you are planning a renovation and staying put, call 724-742-8170 for a free walkthrough.
